Things to Do in Dambulla

Dambulla is an important stop for visitors exploring Sri Lanka's cultural heartland, particularly its celebrated cave temple complex. Learn about the destination and consider how to combine it with nearby heritage sites on your journey.

Dambulla's cave temple complex is one of the best-preserved in Asia. Five caves cut beneath a huge rock shelter more than 150 Buddha statues and painted ceilings that flow over every surface – the work of kings and artists across two millennia.

The town sits at the heart of the Cultural Triangle, making it a convenient base for Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa and the elephant parks, with a busy wholesale market that shows a different side of local life.
